What You Need to Know About Crossing International Borders in a Rental Car

cars entering the international border of the us and mexico

Are you planing to cross the Alaska-Canada border in a car rental, but not sure if this is allowed? Crossing an international border in a rental car is easy as long as you prepare the required documentation for your trip. Read the answers to the two questions we get asked a lot on crossing the U.S.-Canada and Alaska-Canada borders.

1. Can I drive a rental car from U.S. into Canada / Canada into U.S.?

Broadly speaking, both American and Canadian citizens can cross the border into either country in a rental car without much problem as long as they present the necessary documents and have permission from the rental company.

For Canadians driving to the U.S. in a car rental, just make sure to inquire about any fees that may apply and ask for the essential car rental documents from your supplier.

Americans should have no problem driving a rental car into Canada. However, if you are a dual U.S. / Canadian citizen or have a permanent residence in the country, ask the rental company to issue you a Canadian Non-Resident Insurance Card. If you want to find out more useful information on how to cross the U.S.-Canada border, read Driving Across the U.S. - Canadian Border: What You Need to Know.

2. Can I drive a rental car from Alaska into Canada?

Most car rental companies, including Budget, Dollar and Thrifty do not allow vehicles rented in Alaska to travel outside of Canada. Therefore, we recommend you contact and ask your rental car provider directly to see whether leaving Alaska in a rented car is allowed.
