More than a million visitors will descend upon Calgary this week for the annual Calgary Stampede. Celebrate the rich culture of Western Canada in this ten-day extravaganza.

You will not be short of things to do, with a stellar line-up of live performances planned and tributes to Alberta's heritage in what as come to be known as the “greatest outdoor show on earth.” Here are three reasons you should consider checking out the Calgary Stampede this year.

Watch thrilling rodeo events

Top competitors will battle it out for more than two million dollars in prize money. Watch several different rodeo events, including the nail-biting moments when bull-riders attempt to hold on for a long eight seconds. Other events include barrel racing, steer wrestling and bareback riding.

Cowboy Hat

Don't miss main events like the GMC Rangeland Derby, one of the world's most famous chuckwagon races, or the Transalta Grandstand Show. The performance will be extra-special this year for Canada's 150-year celebrations, with a dazzling pyrotechnic display.

Get your fill of live country music

For country music fans, you'll find plenty to enjoy at this year's event. With many great headliners performing over the ten-day period, you can listen to all the best of local and international stars. At the Saddledome stage, you can listen to performances from the likes of Brooks & Dunn, Johnny Reid and Alabama.

If rock, pop and alternative music are more your thing, head to the Coca-Cola Stage where headliners such as Ben Harper and Alessia Cara will take the stage. Budding musicians can also take part in a talent competition with $16,000 up for grabs.

Try some delicious food

With so much great food on offer, your taste buds are sure to be tingling while you explore downtown Calgary. Many local restaurants and cafes host special events, like the wine-tasting at Wine Garden. Visitors can enjoy unique foods like maple walnut cotton candy, maple bacon donuts and waffles.

While you are exploring downtown Calgary, be sure to watch the parade which kicks off the festivities. The area will be abuzz with live entertainment, competitions and activities for people of all ages. Also on offer is a delicious pancake breakfast.
