Before you book your car rental, here is quick guide to the different sizes of vehicle that are available.

Compact or economy

If you are renting an economy or compact car, this is usually suitable for up to five passengers. The cars can be either two-door or four-door, and are generally smaller models like the Kia Rio, Chevrolet Spark, or the Hyundai Accent.

The advantage of renting a compact car is the cheaper prices and improved gas mileage. Smaller cars are also easier to park due to their size. If you are planning on exploring cities like Toronto or Vancouver, economy or compact rental cars are ideal. However, you and your passengers will have limited space, with the trunk usually fitting just one suitcase. If you have excess luggage, this may not be the car size for you.

Intermediate or standard

If you are finding an economy car is too small, try for a mid-size vehicle instead. These vehicles are suitable for five passengers, and include models such as the VW Jetta, Hyundai Elentra and Toyota Corolla.

Gas mileage is not as good as it is with a compact car, but you will have increased room for luggage in a mid-size vehicle. If you are planning on a have more passengers or need more luggage space, while still being able to comfortably navigate city roads, the standard or intermediate car is a good option.

Full-size or SUV

A full-size vehicle is perfect if you are travelling with a bigger group, or need plenty of space for storage. SUV vehicles also have increased driving abilities if you are planning on navigating more challenging roads. These vehicles include the Nissan Rogue, Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ford Escape.

These vehicles do not have as good gas mileage, but they have plenty of room for luggage, and are great if you are planning on exploring the countryside.

Luxury

Looking to spend a little extra money and travel in style? Rental car companies provide a number of luxury vehicles. These vehicles include a Chrysler 300S or the Cadillac XTS.

Whether you are heading to an important meeting, or just looking to travel with an additional level of comfort, consider renting a luxury vehicle. Luxury vehicles generally have adequate storage space and comfortable seating.

Vans

Need extra space? If a full-size or SUV car does not provide enough space, consider renting a passenger van. Depending on the model these can seat up to seven passengers, and provide ample storage space.

If you're looking to specially rent a car to move equipment across town, a minivan might be a good option. These models include the Dodge Grand Caravan.
