When you hire a car in Canada, there are a few restrictions as to where you can drive your vehicle, and how you can use it. If you use the vehicle in a way that breaks the terms and conditions of your rental agreement, you will void any insurance you have, meaning you could be liable to pay the cost of any damage. Here are a few important details to know about common restrictions:

  • Without insurance, you are unable to travel into the US. Some suppliers do not permit travel into Alaska at all. You are also generally not permitted to drive to Mexico.
  • It is mostly not a problem to take your rental car into another province, however you will need to check the conditions if you are planning on dropping it in a different locations. One-way fees may apply.
  • You cannot drive the vehicle on any unpaved roads, or surface that is likely to damage the vehicle such as sand.

With authorization, you can generally take the car into the United States. For example, if you are visiting Niagara Falls you are able to cross to the American side provided you have authorization, proper documentation and insurance. You cannot take the vehicle off paved roads for the duration of your rental.
