Can I rent a car without a credit card in Canada?
Car rental providers generally accept credit cards, but some offer alternative payment methods as well.
What credit cards do car hire companies in Canada accept?
Most car rental providers will accept credit cards that are American Express, MasterCard, or VISA .These are the most widely recognised credit cards and are accepted by most providers.
Can I use someone else’s Credit Card?
A valid credit card presented with the renter’s name is required to rent a vehicle. Keep note that the name, address and signature have to match the renter’s driver’s license to be accepted. Generally, credit card under a different person’s name is not accepted.
Car rental company policies on credit cards
In Canada, renters will be required to present a credit card in their name. Here is a guide to our car rental providers’ policies regarding credit cards.
Alamo
Credit cards accepted: In Alamo's Canadian depots, American Express, MasterCard and Visa are accepted.
A credit card in the renter’s name must be presented at the time of pick up. If a credit card was used to pay for the rental, the same card must be used at the time of pick up.
Avis
Credit cards accepted: Avis accepts most major credit cards including American Express, AT&T Capital, Diner's, JCB, Mastercard, Sears and Visa. The credit card must be in the name of the driver.
Budget
Credit cards accepted: Budget will accept most major credit cards. Drivers must present a credit card in the name of the driver.
Enterprise
Credit and debit cards accepted: American Express, MasterCard and Visa will be accepted at Canadian Enterprise locations.
A credit card must be presented in the renter’s name.
Hertz
Credit cards accepted: American Express, Mastercard, Diners Club, Discover, JCB, Visa are all accepted.Credit cards must have available credit.
National
Credit cards accepted: National accepts American Express, MasterCard, Visa, and Discover credit cards, in the name of the renter.Thrifty
Credit cards accepted: Renters must present a credit card in their name upon pickup. American Express, MasterCard and Visa will be accepted.
