Jonquiere is a beautiful borough or "arrondissement" located in the city of Saguenay, in the region of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, in the province of Quebec, Canada. Jonquiere is situated along the Saguenay River, near Chicoutimi. Until 2002, Jonquiere was an independent city, but that year, together with Chicoutimi, La Baie, Lac-Kenogami, Latteriere, Tremblay and Shipshaw formed the larger new city Saguenay. The older Jonquiere was founded in 1975, from the merge of Jonquiere, Kenogami and Arvida. The original Jonquiere was settled by Marguerite Belley in 1847 and named in honor of Marquis de La Jonquiere, a former governor of New France. Current or former residents of the city are hockey player Pierre Pilote, singer Annie Villeneuve and all the members of the heavy metal band Voivod.
