Jonquiere is a beautiful borough or "arrondissement" located in the city of Saguenay, in the region of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, in the province of Quebec, Canada. Jonquiere is situated along the Saguenay River, near Chicoutimi. Until 2002, Jonquiere was an independent city, but that year, together with Chicoutimi, La Baie, Lac-Kenogami, Latteriere, Tremblay and Shipshaw formed the larger new city Saguenay. The older Jonquiere was founded in 1975, from the merge of Jonquiere, Kenogami and Arvida. The original Jonquiere was settled by Marguerite Belley in 1847 and named in honor of Marquis de La Jonquiere, a former governor of New France. Current or former residents of the city are hockey player Pierre Pilote, singer Annie Villeneuve and all the members of the heavy metal band Voivod. If you plan to visit the city, do not forget of its main attractions.
Les Halles du Parc de la Riviere-aux-Sables is a beautiful public square of Jonquiere. This large space benefits of a beautiful arhitecture, complimented by the wonderful nature of the city. The square is an important venue for community events of Jonquiere that take place each year the city, like music festivals or farmers' markets through the summer.
Lac-Saint-Jean is a very large lake and an important attraction of Jonquiere. It has more than 35 kilometers in diameter and an area of approximately 1,000 square kilometers. This lake is one of the largest on the territory of Canada and draws thousands of tourists to Jonquiere. The area of Lac-Saint-Jean has a lot of resorts and is also a famous fishing area.
